Explosives were prohibited due to:
n Fear of nitrates penetrating
underground spring and walls
n Shock waves and vibration
effecting surrounding houses, shops & roads
n High noise levels
n High dust levels
Hydraulic rock breakers were not considered due to:
n The considerable duration
to break the granite
n Exorbitant costs involved
n Increased and continuous noise
